Thoughts on U2
Here is the thing. U2 are one of the leading bands in the world and play before 80 000 people each night of their tour. Yet they somehow managed to make all of their 3 shows in Ireland incredibly personal. On the first night they played 'Wild Horses' for only the 4th or 5th time ever and on Monday night they changed up their ending to their set so as t0 make those in attendance believe they were getting a 2nd encore. When I was there, it was the whole getting a member of the crowd to play with them thing.
Now, I am biased but not so biased as I am when it comes to following sports teams. I am the first to admit that I am far from a musical genuis but I do know what I like and man did I ever like U2. They may not be the worlds most talented band but they certainly know how to perform live.
Going into the concert, I was a little nervous. My expectations were so high that in some ways I thought that there was no way that they could be met. Steve-o had been getting at me over the fact that U2 were repeating Vertigo at the end of each show and his opinion that it was wrong. I saw where he was coming from and to be honest I hoped that they wouldn't perform that stunt at Croke Park. The strange thing is though that when they did perform Vertigo for the 2nd time, it just felt right. I felt like I had been taken on a journey by U2 for 2 and a quarter hours and finsihing the way they did only seemed right.
To anyone that doesn't like U2 I say this. Sure there are bands that you may think have more talent and sure you may say that U2 are too into politics for what is meant to be a rock band. However, using only 2 guitars, a bass and a drum set no one can move a crowd like Bono and co did over the past weekend.
Pics to come as soon as they are emailed to me!!! We were only 6 yards from the stage!!!
