Ants Marching
Before I get to the main point of my post, I have to mention the fact that Belfast City Airport is no more. That's right, it's now called the George Best Airport (or at least it will be come May 1st). Well, I don't know what to make of it aside from to say that for all his faults if there was ever one guy that brought both sides of our community together it was him.
So ok, onto what I wanted to talk about. As is probably obvious, last night I was listening to a bit of the Dave Mathews Band. Now I don't particularly listen to his lyrics much but for once I actually paid attention to the song "Ants Marching". It was about how mundane our lives can become when we are stuck in a rut of work, sleep, work, sleep etc.
Now, don't take me the wrong way as I love Dave's music but I couldn't help but think this thought wasn't exactly anything groundbreaking. Indeed, when I think about it, I can't really think of any friends with whom I haven't at some point discussed the fact that we as humans are often little more than lemmings.
So my question is if we are aware of how pointless our life can become if we let it, why do so many people let it happen to them. Now fair enough, I am new to the working world but I can think of nothing worse than becoming one of those people that I am surrounded by who can do nothing but think of Friday evening.
There is so much to this topic that I don't understand. I mean I think that part of the problem is the fact that as humans we think that we have an image to live up to in our working lives. So we put so much pressure on ourselves to meet this image that we get fed up and just want to go home. Yet we spend pretty much more time working than we do anywhere else. So why is it that people allow themselves to become miserable just for a two night's pleasure every 7 days.
People always tell adicts that the first step to beating their problem is admitting that a problem does indeed exist. Surely as a human race, we are all aware of how awful and stressful this work/sleep life can become. So why can't we stop it???
